Knitting My First Baby Sweater: A Lovely Handmade Gift

When we were invited to a family baby shower, I knew I wanted to make something handmade for the new baby. I decided this was finally the perfect excuse to try something I'd never knitted before - a baby sweater!

For my first sweater, I chose the Baby Novus pattern by Laura Nelkin. I've admired Laura's knitting designs for a long time, and knitted a few of her other patterns so I was excited to finally knit one of her sweaters.

For the yarn, I chose Ice Yarns 100% Baby Giza Cotton in a soft light pink. I loved the idea of using cotton for a baby sweater, and the pale pink made such a sweet little finished sweater for a sweet baby girl.

Of course, there was one small problem: I was on a deadline. The baby shower was coming up quickly, and once I started knitting, there was no turning back!

Learning as I Went

One of the things that made this project especially interesting was the sweater's unusual construction. Instead of knitting it in the way I expected, the Baby Novus is worked from side to side, beginning at the sleeve and working toward the center. The two sides are eventually joined together in the middle.

That meant I got to try some techniques that were completely new to me, including using stitch saver to hold the live stitches while I worked on another section of the sweater. That's one of the things I love about knitting - there's always something new to learn, no matter how long you've been doing it.

There were definitely a few mistakes. I had moments when I needed to back up, figure out what I'd done wrong, and try again. I watched Laura's videos over and over until things finally clicked. The stitch saver was sometimes like handling octopus tentacles :) But overall, the sweater went much more smoothly than I expected.

And slowly, it started actually looking like a tiny sweater!

The Race to Finish

As the baby shower got closer, knitting time became a little more serious. I really wanted to have the sweater finished in time rather than showing up with a half-knitted baby gift and an IOU.

Thankfully, I made it!

Seeing the finished little sweater was especially satisfying because it was my first time knitting a baby sweater. It's always fun to finish a project, but there's something particularly special about making something by hand for a new baby.

The sweater was finished, blocked, dried and ready to give away just in time for the shower.

Would I Knit Another Baby Sweater?

Absolutely.

This project reminded me that sometimes it's worth choosing something just a little outside your comfort zone. I learned some new things, made some mistakes, fixed them, and ended up with a handmade gift I was really happy to give.

And now I can officially say I've knitted a sweater. Granted, it was a very tiny sweater—but I'm counting it.
