Cobblestone Cowl & Fingerless Mitts – Textured Knit Set for Beginners & Intermediate Knitters
I knew I wanted to design something around this yarn the moment I saw it - a beautifully marled alpaca, silk, and merino blend with flecks of rust, cream, blue, and olive running through it. But marled yarn like this is tricky. Anything too busy gets lost in all that color movement.
So before committing to a design, I swatched a couple of options. A diagonal seed stitch looked lovely on paper, but on the needles, it practically disappeared into the marl. Interrupted Garter Stitch, on the other hand, held its own. The simple knit-and-purl grid gave just enough structure to let the yarn's color variation actually show through, instead of competing with it.
That swatch became the Cobblestone Cowl, and its matching Fingerless Mitts. The cowl is beginner-friendly and the mitts are intermediate, both use the same simple stitch pattern, and both are built to let a special skein of yarn do the talking.

What You'll Need to Make This Set
Aran or heavy worsted weight yarn, ideally with a gauge around 17 sts = 4" in stockinette. This set was designed with Ice Yarns Paella Alpaca (baby alpaca, silk, and merino blend). Paella Alpaca has since been discontinued, but Ice Yarns carries other Aran-weight yarns that would work well. If substituting, purchase a bit extra to allow for gauge swatching, since the original design uses nearly the full 2 skeins for the cowl with very little left over.
US 8 (5.0 mm) circular needle, 20" to 24", for the cowl
US 8 (5.0 mm) double-pointed needles, for the mitts
Stitch marker(s)
Waste yarn (for the mitts' thumb gusset)
Yarn needle with a large eye
Scissors
Row counter (optional)
Yarn tip: A marled or tweedy colorway like this one really benefits from a simple, structured stitch pattern — busy or lacy stitch patterns tend to get visually swallowed by color variation, while something like Interrupted Garter Stitch lets both the texture and the color show.
Understanding Interrupted Garter Stitch
Both the cowl and mitts use the same simple stitch pattern: a repeating sequence of knit rounds and a *k1, p4 round, creating a subtle grid texture reminiscent of cobblestones (hence the name).
It's genuinely simple, just knits and purls, no cables, no lace, no colorwork - which makes it approachable even if you've never worked a textured stitch before. Once you've worked through the first repeat, the rhythm becomes easy to memorize.
Why it works for beginners: There's no shaping to track and no chart to follow, just an easy-to-remember round sequence that repeats throughout the whole piece.

Who Is This Set For?
This set spans two skill levels, so there’s something here whether you’re just starting out or ready for a bit more of a challenge.
The Cobblestone Cowl is a great fit if you:
Are new to knitting in the round, or want more practice with it
Want a genuinely beginner-friendly project. No seaming, no complex shaping
Love the look of textured knits but don’t want to tackle cables or lace yet
It requires only casting on, joining in the round, and following a simple round repeat. No shaping at all.
The Cobblestone Fingerless Mitts are a great next step if you:
Are comfortable knitting in the round on double-pointed needles
Want to practice thumb gusset shaping and picking up stitches
Are ready to move beyond beginner projects into something with a bit more technique
The mitts introduce paired gusset increases, working across multiple dpns, and picking up stitches for the thumb - labeled Intermediate accordingly. If you’ve made a hat or sock heel before, you’re ready for these.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this pattern good for beginners?
The Cobblestone Cowl is. It involves no shaping and no seaming, just casting on, joining in the round, and repeating a simple knit-and-purl stitch pattern. The Cobblestone Fingerless Mitts are Intermediate. They’re worked on double-pointed needles and include a thumb gusset with paired increases and picked-up stitches. If you’ve made a hat or a basic cowl before and want to try something with a bit more technique, they’re a good next step.
What yarn works best for this set?
An Aran or heavy worsted weight yarn that knits to approximately 17 sts = 4" in stockinette. Marled or tweedy colorways work especially well with the Interrupted Garter Stitch texture.
How much yarn do I need?
The cowl uses approx. 100 g / 160 m (175 yds), which is 2 skeins of Paella Alpaca. Yardage is tight, so if you’re substituting, plan on about 195–200 yds. The mitts use approx. 60 g / 96 m (105 yds) per pair. If you’re making both from the same yarn, you’ll need roughly 280 yds combined, plus a little extra.
Do I have to make both pieces?
Not at all. The cowl and mitts are sold as separate patterns, and each one stands on its own. If you’d like both, add them to the same cart on Ravelry and you’ll save 15%, or look for the "Add both to cart" button on either pattern on Etsy to save 15%.
Can I adjust the mitts’ size?
The mitts are written as one size with a stretchy, forgiving fit. To size up, add stitches to the palm section only (see the sizing note in the pattern).
What if I can’t find the exact yarn used?
Paella Alpaca has been discontinued. Any Aran or heavy worsted weight yarn that matches the gauge above will work as a substitute. You can find other ideas at Ice Yarns here.
